Praha
GOOD MORNING…
Another day I need it to not be raining on. There was a lot I wanted to see, and I was hoping the weather would hold out. I needed to see this dragon.
And I had heard about this amazing van. YES! There it was.
Prague or Praha is one old fucking town. While in some European cities it seems like there are old buildings around, here, it is like there are some modern buildings.
The parks were full of monuments and sculptures.
And above every door was amazing representations of what might have happened in that building in the past, or some sort of statement of power or purpose.
If those masons show up at my house, I am telling you right now, this is what my doorway is going to look like. Now that is one sexy entry way.
Zues himself, or some other god-like figure bows his head as the powerful who work here pass by. That is a statement. I will take two of these as well.
I think this is were Laugh In got the idea. These two just make wise-crack remarks to passer-bys.
Across the river, the old walled castle on the hill.
This park had the most insane fountain in it. Water poured down this thing.
The figures were powerful and frightening.
And I think these doggy bags might have a positive effect in keeping the grass so green. I love that the dog is reading the paper and has slippers on.
The “bars” on these windows seemed like they predated window glass by a least 100 years.
Big-ups plaque.
All of those pictures were taken on a planned route to the Pinkas Synagogue.
I had been to this modest building once before. It was closed for rehabilitation construction. I was excited to see it was open.
It is such a modest building from outside. It looks like a house, but the powerfulness comes from what the building now holds.
This is the names of 80,000 Jewish people who lived in Bohemia and Moravia and were murdered by the Nazis.
They are grouped by where they lived, then last name. There are some groups of family names that take up half a wall. And then it has their birth day and the day of their death. It immediately took my breath away. So many names, of such different ages, with the same date for their death.
This photos is a huge example. I did not take any photos since they asked people not to out of respect for the site. A lot of people did anyways. These I believe are official photos, that I took off the internet. If you click on it, it will expand in a new window.
This building is on the other side of the cemetery and house the mortuary.
This tiny cemetery has 12,000 tombstones from people who died between the mid 1400s and 1787. They suspect there are a much greater number of Jews actually buried there.
They would bring in additional soil and make a new layer to bury people in. They would move the tombstones up a level, and that is why there are so many headstones in such a small area.
Franz Kafka sculpture outside of the Spanish Synagogue.
The Spanish Synagogue might be the most intricately painted building I have ever seen. Hey Lamb Balls, if you can’t paint like this get over to my house. My living room is calling.
I like that the one lady on the right is totally yelling at the one on the left. I like to think it is over something stupid. But i bet it is from the bible.
PORK. Full on BBQ right in the town square.
Cities in America are missing town squares.
Surrounded by impressive buildings.
And scary churches.
This place was huge.
This is the archway over a bridge with more sculptures then I think most US cities might have in their city limits.
Seems like the Pilsner Urguell should step back a little bit.
I don’t know much about religion, especially those involving a cross, but I am pretty sure these were all saints.
Babies without bodies?
This might be Chef Boy-R-Dee?
Why are there always so many kids around?
…rollin’ on the river.
…when the saint’s coming marching in.
I guess they didn’t get word that St. Christopher is no longer a saint. It was great to finally see a statue that I recognized.
Amazing detail.
The skies were grey, but it stayed dry for the entire 4 hour walk.
All of a sudden we ran into these guys. It took a second to realize I knew them.
I couldn’t tell if this is where they were invented or if somebody added them later as a marketing gimmick.
The rule seems to be if you don’t have a crown, you need a stick. And if you don’t have a stick you better have a kid.
Or a pile of kids.
Or a cross, a sword, a dog, and some dudes in a cage. I think I saw this at Disneyland in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
It is always amazing when you can actually tell that this city was once a castle.
Even the Starbucks was ready for a siege.
Love was in the air. This is a hunter and a dear holding hands. I am not sure what the story is here.  I tried googling it. Didn’t find anything out.
A stick and a kid.
Big wheel keep on rollin’. An actual water wheel doing something.
Huge golden sword. You had to actually look over the edge of the bridge to see this.
The fact that ancient buildings are still being used for modern uses is great. I also like how they pillars have been caught in the net, and it seems like they are reacting.
Scary puppets everywhere.
Modern working buildings.
